BIG & GREEN edited by David Gissen
Adult non-fiction shelves upper level

As our cities are filling and our globe is warming, architects are looking to green (environmental) methods of building to help relieve the pressure on the earth’s resources. Aside from being environmentally sound, green designs and buildings are currently red-hot in the trends department. Big & Green, covering a former museum exhibit, displays the potential for these green methods on a large urban scale. Don’t know a lot about architecture? No matter- this book is full of pretty pictures, and the fascinating interviews with architects at the end of the book can provide a great introduction for those who are just learning. You’ll be surprised by some of the imaginative ideas that these architects have up their sleeves.

The Devil's Feather

devils%20feather.jpgThe Devil’s Feather by Minette Walters
Adult New Book Display
CD Book Shelves – Main Level

Can’t decide between a cozy, English mystery and an action-packed thriller? Minette Walters’ new mystery has both. It interweaves two plots – a “ripped-from-the-headlines” story of a renegade mercenary and a little local murder in Dorset. The book begins with lots of action when Connie Burns investigates a British soldier-for-hire in connection with a series of brutal rapes and murders in Sierra Leone and Baghdad. Then the story shifts gears when the heroine flees to England in order to hide from the mercenary, who wants her silenced - permanently. The middle part of the story delves into the secrets, scandals, and suspicious characters living in the Dorset village where Connie goes underground. Fans of suspense should not be deterred by the change of pace, because Walters delivers plenty of action in the book’s final chapters.

Good Night, Gorilla

Good Night, Gorilla… and more bedtime stories

Youth DVD Shelves – Lower Level - G

Get ready for bed with these gentle tellings of acclaimed children's picture books. Like all of the Westin Woods Scholastic productions, the book's illustrations are gently animated and set to original music, while a narrator reads the text. Since recent research indicates that television's fast pace makes it more difficult for children to concentrate on the real world, these slower-paced stories are a good way to give children the tv-watching they want without the frantic speed. Plus, the stories are great. This one features Good Night Gorilla, How Do Dinosaurs Say Good Night, Happy Birthday, Moon and The Napping House, with extra stories The Paperboy, Patrick and The Hat.

The Reminder by Feist
CD Bins- Rock- F

Is there an emptiness in your life that can only be filled with some sweet summer tunes? You’re in luck: earlier this year Canadian-born Leslie Feist, also of indie-rock group Broken Social Scene, released her second major solo album to rave reviews, and its variety of styles (upbeat and peppy as well as mellow and relaxed) are perfect for everything from driving around in the sun to relaxing by the pool. Feist is described by the indie music gurus at Pitchfork Media as owning a voice, “marked by specks of Dusty Springfield's soul, Björk's confrontational adventurousness, and Joni Mitchell's warmth.” You’ll enjoy the versatility of this songwriter as her songs alternately inspire and haunt you.
