Main Stair Closed

The public stairs to the Lower Level was closed this morning as construction begins on the new stair to the Upper Level. We expect the stair to be closed until early September. Meantime, the public elevator is open and one of the emergency exit stairways will be pressed into service for people to get to the Lower Level.

First look at the 3rd Floor interior

We can all see the progress on the exterior, but here's a
glimpse of what the interior of the third floor looks like.
Have you wondered what all of that blue plastic is covering -
well, now you can see it from the inside!

Work on dormers continues.

The dormer on the entrance side of the building takes shape
as workmen take advantage of the good weather.
The dormer on the north side of the building is the largest one,
which will provide plenty of natural lighting for the third floor.

Public Elevator

As of Wednesday, June 14, the Library's public elevator is closed. Workers will need three to four weeks to extend the elevator to the Upper Level. That's the bad news. The good news is -- we have a staff elevator behind the scenes. If you need to use an elevator to get to the lower level, flag staff at the checkout desk; we'll be glad to escort you. If you are looking for something specific, you can also call 453-0750 and press '3': A Librarian will help track down your items and have them held at the checkout desk. pt

Locking Your Bike

Our bike rack is under the construction area for a new dormer in the library roof. We expect it to be unavailable for use until mid-July. Meantime, lock your bike to the large chain across the front of the fence. pt

The big crane and more steel beams arrive !

Construction continues on the large dormer on the entrance
side of the Library.
It was quite a sight as the tall crane dominated the skyline while
moving the beams in place for the dormer construction.

Look for dormer steel

Setting steel for East and West dormers began this morning (Friday) at 6 a.m. Crews are working around rain showers, but hope to have structure in by early afternoon. It will be a bit noisy in the building until then, but the sooner the dormers are up and closed in, the better. Large North Dormer scheduled for early next week. Check out cool construction photos from Kathy P. pt

Welcome to the Library Renovation Updates Page!

In April 2006, the Board of Trustees of the Plymouth District Library voted to proceed with the plans to renovate the Library. Plans include finishing the Library’s unfinished upper level, creating a youth-only area on the lower level, expanding the teen area and reconfiguring the main level.
Construction began this week and will last roughly 18 months. Library staff expects only a few closed days during the process. “One of our primary requirements is that the Library remain open during the construction and available for our Library patrons,” explained Board President, Hugh Harsha.
Total cost of the renovation is estimated at $ 3,700,000, which will come from Library reserves. No tax increase will be needed to fund the project.
